The camp site in Básar is all around the cabin. It is possible to camp in flat areas and in tree coverd areas.
The campsite in Básar is in one of the more beautiful areas in Iceland. The natural beauty is vast and a lot of interesting areas are close by. To name a few there is the volcanic site at Fimmvörðuháls, the volcano Eyjafjallajökull, the glacier Mýrdalsjökull and of course Thorsmork. The Travel Association Útivist began operation in the area around 1980 and first finished the camp sites. The two cabins were built in the next few years.
There are many walking paths in the area. The walking path Básahringur is for both small and big feets and there is a great view from Réttarfell. The cape Útigönguhöfði is good for those who want a little harder walk. The canyon Hvannárgil is a small adventure that is not to be missed. The warden in Básar and the Útivist Offices in Reykjavík have a great walking path map that is good to have along.
When driving to Básar you turn from highway 1 onto road 249 by the waterfall Seljalandsfoss. The road changes to a mountain road F249 and is only for jeeps and larger cars with 4×4. A few glacier rivers are on the way and needs to be crossed with great care since it can treacherous and the river flow can change very quickly.
The campsite is in a flat area close to the cabins and is covered by trees. In the cabins there are toilets and there is also a cole grill next to it.
