Kirkjubæjarklaustur is a village by highway no 1 with the population of 150 people. The location of the village is very beautiful. The history of the village is known from the settlement and it is even believed that munks lived there before the settlement. There was a nun convent there from 1186-1550. In a large volcanic eruption the lava was flowing towards the town when the priest held a mass and prayed that the lava would stop. After the mass the lava had stopped just outside of town. This was, the people thought, because of the prayer and the religious heat of the preast.
