History
Vestmannaeyjar consist of 15 islands and about 30 skerries, with Heimaey being the largest and the only inhabited island with around 4700 inhabitants. There is always a bustling life and plenty to do in Vestmannaeyjar. Over the summer, there are two major football tournaments, the Goslokahátíð festival, and the highlight being the Þjóðhátíð festival held over the Merchant Weekend. In addition, the golf course and swimming pool are major attractions, along with numerous excellent restaurants and shops. Not to mention the beautiful nature wherever you look.
January 23, 1973, was a fateful day in the history of Vestmannaeyjar when the eruption began on Heimaey.
Most residents had to quickly abandon their homes and flee the island. Many never saw their houses and most of their belongings again. The eruption lasted for about 5 months and a third of the town, or roughly 400 houses and buildings, were destroyed. While the eruption lasted, there was great uncertainty about whether there would ever be human settlement in Vestmannaeyjar again. We still haven't reached the same number of residents as before the eruption, when there were about 5300 inhabitants living here.
For tourists visiting Vestmannaeyjar, it is essential to visit Eldheimar, a impressive museum about the eruption on Heimaey.
