Varmahlíð

The campsite in Varmahlíð is an extremely sheltered and family-friendly area with countless recreational opportunities nearby.
The area is to the south of the hill above the village of Varmahlid and is located in an old forestry-research center that was run by the government. Seeds were gathered from all over the northern hemisphere and grown in this sheltered place to see which ones suited best and then young plants were sold to the pioneers of forest planting in the area.

The campsite is relatively new but the forest is old, first trees planted in 1947. The area is therefore surrounded by decades-old forest and thus very sheltered. The campsite is divided into smaller areas by belts of trees that used to shelter the small plants growing there getting ready to be planted out to fend for themselves. But for those that are interested then you will be hard pressed to find a forest in Iceland with a more versatile group of individuals from Canada, Alaska, Siberia and all of Scandinavia. The forest has a multitude of footpaths that make it a great outdoor recreation and adventure area for young and old. From the hilltop itself there is a magnificent view of Skagafjörður and the sunset is indescribable.

In the middle of the area is a large Trampoline that blows up at 10 in the morning and turns off at 10 in the evening, and next to the area there are football fields and playgrounds. Following a path through the forest there is a short walk to the swimming pool in Varmahlíð, which is extremely child-friendly with a new slide, hot tub and sauna.

NOTE The campsites at Sauðárkrók, Hofsós, Hólum and Varmahlíð are run by the same family, so you can spend the first night at one of these four campsites and then get a lower price for the next night at one of the other campsites.

Description of facilities

A peaceful and pleasant place with four separate buildings, toilets, showers, kitchen, and our office. Plenty of hot and cold water and electricity plugs. The old forest ranger's house has been converted into a bright and lovely kitchen facility where you can also find a washing machine and dryer. The newest building in the area includes four showers and a toilet for the disabled.

On the campsite itself there is a so-called Ærsbelgur (blown up trampoline) where dozens of children can have fun together for hours. The forest is a world of adventure and a large network of paths throughout it, but still no risk of getting lost😊 There are two football fields at the campsite and only 250 m. walk along a beautiful forest path to a playground and a swimming pool that is 25 x 12.5 m., together with a hot tub and a sauna. In addition, there is a separate children's pool that is heated, with a new slide for the younger guests.

There is an information center in the village where all information regarding recreation, hiking trails, services, museums, churches, etc. can be found, and next to it is the shop Olís, which is both a traditional restaurant and a shop that sells most things you will need.
