To get to the camping site you need to take route 54 from Borgarnes and drive West. Once you reach route 55 (Heydalsvegur) you turn right. At the crossroads you see a blue sign with a map of the Hnappadalur area. From the crossroads to the Hallkellsstadarhlid is a 15km drive.
Hallkellsstadahlid is located 100km North-west from Reykjavik. To get to the camping site you need to drive North to Borgarnes. From Borgarnes you take route 54 drive West. Once you reach route 55 (Heydalsvegur) you turn right. At the crossroads you see a blue sign with a map of the Hnappadalur area. From the crossroads to the Hallkellsstadarhlid is a 15km drive. The camping site is conveniently located with equal travelling distance to Borgarnes, Stykkisholmur and Budardalur (50km).
The camping site features flushing toilets, drinking water. Talk to the staff and they will arrange a horseback riding tour. Also, you will find number of trails and hiking routes around the surround lakes and mountains.
If you like to fish you can purchase a license to fish in Lake Hlidarvatn. The lake is adjacent to the camping site within a short walking distance. There has been very good fishing in Lake Hlíðarvatn both char and trout.
When staying at the camp site you have many exciting places to see such as the six volcanic craters: Eldborg, Barnaborg, Raudhalsar, Raudukulurnar (two) and Gullborg. Also the cave Gullborgarhellir. You only need to drive 10-30 minutes to get these places and other. If you like hiking you can hike Mountain Geirhnjukur (898m). The view from the top is magnificent. You need to be an experienced hiker although you do not need any special equipment to get to the top except for good hiking boots, outdoor clothing (2-3 layers) and some food to take along. Also, if you want to walk along the famous Three lake route (Thriggjavatnaleid) you need to pass through Hallkelsstadarhlid.
