Description of facilities

Þakgil is located between Mýrdalsjökull and Mýrdalssands, about 20 km from the highway. As the name indicates the weather is often very good there. The name can be translated as “the canyon with a roof”. You turn from the highway at Höfðabrekku which is about 5 km east of Vík. The road to Þakgil is suitable for smaller cars also.

A part of the road leading to Þakgil was a part of Highway no 1 until 1995. Then the bridge was taken by a flood from Mt Katla and so the road was moved closer to the sea. On the way to Þakgil you will see a cave called Stórihelli (e. big cave), about 6 km from the road. In the old days this cave was used for gatherings and dances.

There are many walk paths in the area that is suitable for everybody. Camp site, toilet and showers. The dining room is a natural made cave and in it you can find tables, chairs and a barbeque.

The camp site is suitible for individuals as well as groups.
